"Lynnette Baughman's writing is as sharp and clear as the skies above her beloved New Mexico ... a sure winner."--Jack Olson, Edgar Award winner and author of Hastened to the Grave

I looked back to get a better look at the ambassador. Just then another car, a white subcompact, pulled into the narrow area under the restaurant's porte cochere, right behind the Towncar. It stopped with a screech of brakes and I saw the driver open his door and dive for the bushes in the center of the curved driveway.
"Get down!" I screamed and grabbed Katy by her shoulders, forcing her face down to the seat and slamming my body on top of her. A split second later the white car exploded, and the back, side and front windows of the Volvo exploded inward, shattering the safety glass into a thousand pieces of blue glass. I heard Luis call 911, identify himself and the emergency. I lifted my head to look behind us. The white car was a flaming hulk of metal. The Towncar didn't look too bad, probably thanks to armor plating. But the ambassador, the elegant woman, the chauffeur, and one bodyguard were all on the ground, covered with blood. The woman was crawling toward the door. The other bodyguard leaned on the Towncar, his weapon drawn. Luis leaped out of his car with his gun drawn and yelled to Rick, "Get them out of here!" Before Rick could get around to the driver's side I yanked my door handle and staggered out on rubber legs. "Luis!" I screamed. "Luis! Watch out!" In a split second Luis saw where I was pointing and spun his body in that direction. "He's the driver!" I screamed louder. "He's got a gun!"
