"I'm afraid we've already lost," Ray Stebbins says.
Jacqueline LaRue stares at her lawyer for a moment. His large desk looms between them, intimidating her as always. "What about the appeal?" she finally asks. "Aren't you planning an appeal?" Her lawyer leans back and sighs. "I don't think we have a chance on the appeal," he replies. "Evercom's got this thing sewn up backwards and forwards." Incensed, Jacqueline grabs her cane and bangs it once on the floor. "Ray, I don't pay you to tell me we've lost. We have a right to appeal the decision, and I want to do so." He blinks. "Ms. LaRue, you do know that the California legal system has changed a lot since you signed that contract sixty years ago."
