The tunnel lay like a watercolor in his memory, but a watercolor muddied by the passage of time, its hues all faded and blurred with age. Moss smudged, it stretched on and on, the light at the end catching against the damp corner of an exposed brick halfway along its length. A trickle of water snaked along its middle, sinuous against the earth-packed floor. Above sat undergrowth, thick, impenetrable, scattered with fallen leaves from the great trunked trees that straddled its arch, rooted deep in the humped earth above it. Within the tunnel lay shadow, damp and musty.
The image had been with Peter for years, lancing through his dreams, the bright light at its end bursting through his darkness. Sometimes he'd think about that picture, try and work out its significance, but to no avail. It revealed itself at the oddest times, seemingly not tied to any particular part of his life.
