Mrs. Walton lifted her glass with one manipulative appendage, a radiant "smile" on her mouthpart. She pressed the glass forward across the table at appendage length, as if to clink it with the glass held up by her nonexistent companion in a ritual salute. Then she poured a small portion of the contents of the glass into her mouthpart. She replaced the glass on the table, a pink smudge of color transferred from the rim of her mouthpart to the rim of the glass.
She arched the dark strips of hair above her two recessed eyes, obviously listening. She nodded her head in a strikingly Beniyan-like gesture of agreement, and vocalized a response.
One of the two Beniyans observing through the remote monitor overlooking the dining room in which Mrs. Walton sat, quite alone, scratched his gills.
