eBook Description: The Sawk swoops and takes the boy Mendin, the Guide-to-be, in its massive claws to feed its young, bypassing Jenard. Jenard will be the people's Guide, then, but his heart isn't in it and he leaves the village to live as a hermit. For years, he studies the Sawk. One day, he hears the answer to his question: Why my brother and not me? "When death calls, the spirit listens." But the body must act, but justice and revenge may only be bought with sacrifice and blood.

The Sawk shrieked and dived out of the sky at the two boys. They ran, fleeing through the forest clearing for the safety of the brush and boulders--too far away. Only two steps behind his older brother, Jenard stumbled and fell. He screamed, anticipating the stab of foot-long talons in his unprotected back. But the bird passed over him. The brush of its massive wings sucked the air from his lungs. Jenard watched as the bird took his brother Mendin, the Guide-to-be, only a step from the safety of the rocks.
