Linnea n'ha Marilla sat quietly in the gatehouse at Nevarsin under the disapproving eye of the porter. She wondered whether it was Renunciates the monk disliked or simply women in general. The sun had shifted noticeably to the west during the time she had been sitting there, and she hoped that the Abbot had by now at least received the message she had carried in such haste from Ardais. Lady Rohana of Ardais had sent Linnea to fetch her grandson, Dyan Ardais, home from his studies at Nevarsin so that she could bid him farewell before she died--an event which was expected to occur within the tenday. Linnea had been three days on the road from Ardais--although "road" was a rather generous description of the route she had taken, and she wanted to collect the boy quickly and start the journey back before dark and the threatening snowstorm arrived.
