Jamie lay exhausted in the hospital bed, watching the door, fearing the vampires' return. Soon they would come and suck his blood through needle teeth, each stinging prick harder to bear than the last. He knew from experience that it was almost time for them to appear. Every passing moment increased his dread. They would smile at him and talk nicely while they sank their needle teeth into his flesh. Whether they meant to be mean or not didn't matter-it hurt just the same. The cartoon shows were over and the dumb soap operas played one after another. He couldn't reach the remote, and didn't care much anyway. He didn't have the strength. Jamie looked at the hand draped across his narrow chest. The needle had slipped yesterday, leaving a black and blue splotch on the back of his hand. One of the vampires had installed a fresh one, poking a new hole. Jamie thought about pulling it out along with the tube that connected him to the IV bag hanging on the gizmo next to the bed, but if he did, the vampire would just stab him in another place.
