"Candeloro? Don't hover there by the door, man. Come here to me. Now." The King summoned his wizard to his side with a peremptory gesture. "You have heard the news then? The Princess has been found."
"Yes, majesty," replied Candeloro softly, "everyone within the castle shares your relief and joy."
"She is but a child, Candeloro," said the King, his naturally gruff voice softening as he spoke of his only daughter. "I fear ... I would not have her suffer because of my enemies..."
"I understand, your majesty," finished Candeloro. "But sire, the men who took her, they remember only the war. When they hear your name they see only the faces of brothers and sons lost in battle a decade past. They see in your daughter only a means for their revenge. She has been in their keeping these past eight days..." The wizard fell silent. There was no need to say the words. The King knew as well as he what kinds of injury his enemies might inflict upon the girl even in so short a time.
"It was in that war that you came into my service, Candeloro. Do you recall the eve of that last battle?" The King stared at him then, his eyes cold with dread for his daughter. "The magics you worked that night turned the war for us. It was your miracles that gave us victory. I need another miracle from you now, Candeloro. I need you to restore my daughter, to return her to me as she was."
