A piping flute and finger cymbals, swirls of brightly hued cloth twirling through time and space. The nocturnal visit begins. Her consciousness split, part of her recognizing the dream state, part of her moving through the foreign market place. She became the woman in the dream, surrounded by stalls of wares and food. Open-air kitchens spread spicy, exotic scents. Merchants hawked their goods, promising quality products at bargain prices. She glanced down at herself, dimly surprised to see a slight womanly figure wrapped in gauzy turquoise material. She lifted her arms, noting their nut-brown skin covered in jangling bracelets. Moving between the crowded booths on sandaled feet, a bolt of golden cloth caught her attention. Her fingers enjoyed the sensual texture of the brocade material. From behind, a male voice whispered a name. She turned and stared into malevolent, dark eyes. Eyes she recognized. Fear shot through her like a spear. "My face will be the last thing you will ever see," he said. Before she could comprehend his meaning, liquid hit her cheeks, followed immediately by searing pain. Burning! Her face, her neck, her arm. Screams rent the air ... and woke her up. Star panted in her bed, ghostly sensations sizzled along her skin. Dawn filtered through her curtains, enough light to see unscarred hands and arms. She sighed in relief, grateful for her familiar hometown bed. Thank God she wasn't that poor woman of her dreams. The alarm buzzed, bringing the normal world back into focus. Star and her dreams, as her mother would say. She sat up and propelled out of bed. Today, of all days she didn't have to time to ponder the significance of her latest dreamtime adventures. Today E. Star Conrad had a plane to catch. She was going to India.
