Despite the rather stock situation--researchers travel back in time to study the past, and must avoid tampering with the time line--the story succeeds, due to the obvious affection the author has for his subject: Bach, and the transition from Baroque to early classical music between 1750 and 1800. It's also a nice change to see researchers using time travel to study something besides famous battles or the Crucifixion. Of course, something goes wrong, and Ben, the leader of the expedition, must try to avert the catastrophe of changing the past. It's a familiar plot, but Purdom makes it work. There is a lot of good historical detail, and the conflicts both within the expedition and with Bach are well drawn. -Chris Markwyn, Tangent Online (Learn more about Tangent Online, the Internet's leading SF&F short fiction review website)
